Visitors to Calderdale may be surprised by the variety of attractions in the area. Besides its dramatic moorland scenery, crossed by numerous footpaths, and traditional stone buildings there is a wealth of exploring to do in town, village and country.
Halifax is endowed with many historic buildings. The more notable include the Piece Hall which has been restored and is now one of the finest eighteenth century buildings in the country, and Shibden Hall which is now a folk museum.
The EUREKA! museum for children is proving to be a top national attraction. It is a unique, hands-on museum greatly enjoyed by visitors.
Hebden Bridge is an attractive small town built into steep valley sides, where you can see lots of artefacts from the first Industrial Revolution and enjoy the trip of a narrow boat ride along the Rochdale Canal.
Local traditions include clog dancing and the colourful rush bearing festival in Sowerby Bridge.
Criss-crossing the area is an extensive network of packhorse trails and footpaths which link the valleys with the hilltop farming settlements. A wealth of history can be discovered while exploring these. The Calderdale way, a long distance footpath, passes close to the barn, and the Pennine Way is nearby.
